This week in Nursery we have been learning all about Bonfire Night, why we celebrate it, and the different things we can do to celebrate this event. Our main story this week has been ‘Sparks in the Sky’. The story is all about a child’s experience of bonfire night, and what they saw. The story allowed the children to understand what bonfire night is and what they might see, smell and hear. We looked at all of the colours from the fireworks and the noises we might hear on the night. We brought the story alive by taking part in some of the activities below.
The children have loved looking at different types of fireworks such as catherine wheels, rockets and sparklers as well as talking about bonfires. We discussed the importance of staying safe around fires and fireworks, and the children now know all about the fire service and to call 999.
The children have produced some beautiful artwork of fireworks using different coloured paints, glitters, stampers and sponges. We have also made largescale art, decorating black paper outside with squeezy bottles filled with paints.
We were very lucky to be able to have a real bonfire (campfire) which we sang songs, toasted marshmallows, and drank hot chocolate!
We have made our own dances to be fireworks, swirling,
and twirling with ribbons on sticks. We had a think about the different noises fireworks make and added this to our dancing. We also became rockets in the all, making outselves into a pointy shape and counting backward from 10.
In maths this week we made our own 2D shape rockets. We discussed what we can see in the sky and how rockets can take astronauts to the moon and planets.
