Year 2 went exploring for colours and textures in our Forest School. Working in pairs, the children were given a collecting bag, a pencil and a sheet of adjectives. Their challenge was to collect as many examples of objects, that matched the descriptive words, as they could. If they found any additional objects that they could describe, they could go in the bag too. The children were very excited and showed lots of curiosity, using their senses, touch and smell to help them feel their way through the under-growth. They were very supportive of each other and took great delight in seeing how many different examples of the same word they could find.
Once back in class they sorted out their items, then using whiteboards created some sentences using the appropriate adjectives. Many of the children extended their sentences using conjunctions and even expanded noun phrases and in fact began to get quite competitive with each other.
If you are out and about enjoying this clear, winter weather, why not ask your children to describe the world around them and see the delight that they feel from learning new and expressive language.
