Happy hens.

The nursery children went into our Forest School today to learn about how to care for the school hens. Before heading outside we talked about what are the important jobs we need to do to keep our pets safe. Just like us, clean water, food and a safe place to sleep hopefully means our hens are happy and healthy.

The children checked the feeders and filled them up. They made sure they had plenty of clean water, hens drink a surprising amount of water and this is vital for good egg laying. Then made sure they had lots of dry bedding.

The children are now becoming more confident around the hens, as that confidence grows they are calmer and quieter.  The hens then become more relaxed about the children coming into their home. They allow themselves to be stroked and soon, no doubt, picked up. It’s lovely to see these relationships blossom. We definitely have some budding outdoor workers in the making.
